Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Mexico, 1902-

Born in Mexico City in 1902, Manuel Alvarez Bravo has developed a unique style that is deeply rooted in the culture of his native country. During his career, Alvarez Bravo has come in contact with many important artists, including Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Andre Breton and Diego Rivera; his approach, however, has remained distinctly his own. Using both posed and found subjects, his photographs explore everyday scenes and symbols in Mexican life. In a style filled with gentle mystery, Alvarez Bravo poetically evokes the atmosphere and spirit of his country, creating timeless and universal images.
